Overview

Chocolate, watches, secret bank accounts... That's probably what you know of Switzerland. However, the interesting fusion of German, French and Italian ingredients has formed a thriving national culture by itself at this crossroads in the middle of Europe. The Swiss have always welcomed foreigners from all corners of the world and have put a lot of effort into making visitors comfortable. There is public transportation even into the most remote valleys which makes exploring the country really easy as a foreign tourist. And you can be sure that your trains and buses will be on time. And now that Switzerland is part of Schengen, it's easy to combine Switzerland with any other EU country in a single trip to Europe.

A bit of History

Switzerland - or "Swiss Confederation" as it is officially called - was founded in 1291. Initially, it was created as a defensive alliance among the three cantons Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. In later years, other cantons joined the original three. The Swiss Confederation subsequently gained independence from the Roman Empire. Switzerland's sovereignty and neutrality have always been two important pillars of the country's diplomacy, hence Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars, although all its neighbours were. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, has strengthened Switzerland's ties with its neighbours. Many international organizations have their global headquarters in Geneva. However, although Switzerland is now part of Schengen, the country has not joined the European Union and probably never will.
