Overview
Chocolate, watches,
banks... That's probably what you know of Switzerland. The fusion of German, French and Italian
ingredients has formed a thriving national culture at this crossroads in
the middle of Europe. Switzerland has always welcomed foreigners and has
put a lot of effort into making visitors comfortable. There is public
transportation even into the most remote valleys. And you can be sure that your trains
and buses will be on time. And now that Switzerland is part of Schengen,
it's easy to combine Switzerland with any other EU country in a single
trip.
A bit of History
The Swiss Confederation was
founded in 1291. Initially it was created as a defensive alliance among
the three cantons Uri Schwyz and Unterwalden. In
later years, other cantons joined the original three. The Swiss
Confederation gained independence from the Roman Empire by
1499. Switzerland's sovereignty and neutrality have always been honoured by
the major European powers, hence the country was not involved in either of
the two World Wars, although all its neighbours were. The political and economic integration of Europe
over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and
international organizations, has strengthened Switzerland's ties with
its neighbours. However, the country did not officially become a UN
member until 2002. And although Switzerland is part of Schengen, the
country has not joined the European Union.
