SPAIN

On the island of Majorca   On the Canary Islands

Overview

Spain has always been a favourite holiday destinations for many Europeans. But even with more than 50 million visitors a year, you can still travel for days and hear nothing but Spanish. In the charming cities, narrow twisting old roads suddenly open out to stunning views of daring modern architecture, while cozy bars serving wine  and tapas are just across the street from high-tech dancing places. Travel is easy, accommodation plentiful, the climate moderate, the people very laid back, the beaches long and sandy, the food and drink easy to come by and full of regional flavours.

A bit of History

Spain's powerful empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately had to yield command of the seven seas to the United Kingdom. Subsequent failure to embrace the industrial revolutions caused Spain to fall behind much of Europe in economic and political power. Spain was able to remain neutral in World War I and II but suffered a devastating civil war in the 1930s. After the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 a peaceful transition to democracy followed. With help from the European Union, rapid economic modernization have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe today.
