Overview
Hate it or love it but
Singapore is just a hop away from Bangkok. A bewitching blend of East
meets West, and a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and European cultures,
Singapore has a lot to offer, despite being a tiny island. The city
state is renowned for its shopping
malls and street markets, exquisite dining places and charming colonial
quarters. There is also a full calendar of exhilarating and colourful events
not to be missed. Singapore makes a perfect weekend getaway from
Bangkok.
A bit of History
Singapore was founded by
the British as a trading post in 1819. The island joined the Malaysian Federation in
1963 but separated just two years later and became fully autonomous. Singapore
subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with
an economy largely based on international trading and finance. It's per capita GDP
rivals to
that of leading nations of Western Europe.
