The Highlights
Should you go or should you stay? It’s a difficult question that everyone should answer to himself/herself
before traveling to Myanmar. Some people think that traveling to the country will put money into the pockets of the ruling junta and therefore
oppose tourism in Myanmar. The people at Mox Travel think that tourism is one of the few industries where even someone who does not have much
can still make a living. We therefore think responsible tourism will benefit the people of Myanmar. The temples of Bagan are just stunning. And
the bustling life of Yangon is something that you don’t want to miss. And a boat ride on Inle Lake must be the highlight of any Myanmar journey.
A bit of History
The United Kingdom conquered Myanmar over a period of more than 60 years (1824-1886) and made
it a part of their Indian Empire. Myanmar was then administered as a province of India until it became a separate, self-governing colony
in 1937. The country gained full independence in 1948. General Ne Win dominated the government from 1962 to 1988, first as the country’s
military ruler, then as self-appointed president. In fall of 1988, the military deposed of Ne Win and set-up a new ruling junta. Multiparty
elections were held in 1990, however, the junta refused to hand over power to the winning opposition party, the National League for Democracy
(NLD). The party’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was subsequently kept under house arrest for much to the time from 1989 until today. When the ruling
junta unexpectedly increased fuel prices in August 2007, tens of thousands of people marched in protest, led by pro-democracy activists as well as
Buddhist monks. The junta brutally suppressed the protests, killing at least 13 people and arresting thousands of others. Since then, the regime has
continued to raid homes and monasteries and arrest persons suspected of participating in the pro-democracy protests. In May 2008, Myanmar was struck by
devastating Cyclone Nargis which left over 80,000 dead and 50,000 injured.
