The beach near Tulum  Some Maya ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula

Overview

Yes, Mexico is quite far from Thailand but it's well worth the journey. There are ancient ruins from long-gone civilizations, stunning beaches and everywhere you go friendly people eager to show you their culture. From the big metropolis of Mexico City the the remote beaches around Tulum, Mexico has a lot to offer. And don't forget to taste the flavorful local cuisine. Tapas, burritos and guacamole are just a few things you must try. So learn some Spanish and head to Mexico. You won't regret it.

A bit of History

The site of several advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for about 300 years before gaining independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the local currency in 1994 threw the country into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. Mexico had been making an impressive recovery until the global financial crisis hit in late 2008. Ongoing economic and social issues include low wages, unemployment as well as inequitable income distribution. The elections in 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that an opposition candidate - Vicente Fox - defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He was succeeded in 2006 by another candidate from the same party. In 2009, Mexico assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council.

How to Get There

Mexico is pretty much half way around the world from Thailand so e prepared to travel quite a bit to get there. The best option is usually with one of the American airlines like United Airlines or Delta Air Lines. However, you might been a US transit visa for such a journey. Flights via Europe are also an option but are usually significantly more expensive.
