The Highlights

Macau used to be a fairly ugly duck. A trading post and financial center with a focus on making money. hardly any tourists came to this little town in the Pearl river Delta. However, when the Portuguese allowed casinos to be operated in Macau, things started to change. And today, Macau features some of the fanciest architecture in the whole of Asia. The Venetian Macau and other resorts on the Cotai Strip are stunningly beautiful and invite you to spend some money in their casinos.

A bit of History

When it was colonized by Portugal in the 16th century, Macau became the first European settlement in the Far East. The small city state in the Pearl river Delta became a prosperous trading point and later Asia's biggest gambling town. Following an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau would become the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China on 20 December 1999. In this agreement, Beijing promised that China's socialist economic system will not be applied to Macau and that Macau would be granted a high degree of autonomy in all matters for the next 50 years, except in foreign and defense affairs.

How to Get There

There is of course Thai AirAsia that flies from Bangkok to Macau. However, if you want to fly in style, we recommend the daily flights from Air Macau. You also have the option to take a flight to Hong Kong (Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific etc.) and then transfer by ferry directly from Hong Kong airport to Macau.
