A bit of History

In the 17th century, a military dictatorship was the beginning of a long period of isolation from foreign influence. For 200 years this policy enabled the country to produce stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. With the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to significantly modernize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the country became a major regional power that was capable of defeating the forces of both China and Russia. It subsequently occupied the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, and the Sakhalin Island. In the 1930s Japan launched a devastating invasion of China. Japan attacked the United States in Pearl Harbor in 1941, triggering America's entry into World War II. Japan soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its crushing defeat in World War II, the country recovered quickly to become a global economic powerhouse, reaching the status of being the second largest economy in the world. While the Japanese emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual political power rests in somewhat murky networks of politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The Japanese economy went through a major economic slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of phenomenal growth. While Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally, India and China are increasingly gaining momentum both regionally and globally.
