A bit of History
Where to start! Italy has
such a long history! Well it became a nation-state
in 1861 when the regional states on the mainland, along with the islands
of Sardinia
and Sicily, were unified by King Victor Emmanual II. An era of
parliamentary government came to an abrupt end in the early 1920s. It
was when Benito
Mussolini established a Fascist dictatorship. His alliance with Nazi
Germany led to the country's complete defeat in World War II. A more democratic
republic came into being in 1946 and economic development followed soon
after.
Italy is a member of NATO and the European Union. Abolishing the
local "Lira" and replacing it with the Euro was not an easy step for
many proud Italians.
How to Get There
Alitalia is the national
airline of Italy, however, they do not fly to Thailand.
Thai Airways
offers flights from Bangkok to both Milan and Rome.
China Airlines
also offers nonstop flights between Bangkok and Rome a few times per
week. In addition to that, most Asian, European and Middle Eastern
airlines offer connecting itineraries between Thailand and Italy.
