Overview

Greece is the well-known birthplace of drama, geometry, democracy and of course many other great things that are still as much in use now as they were when they were first invented. The country's legacy is virtually unrivalled, making it a great place to visit all year round. The capital Athens offers a fascinating look back into our history and the very development of civilization itself. The islands off the coast are stunningly beautiful, like pearls in the Mediterranean Sea. You will also be amazed by the unique Greek architecture and amazingly varied food.

A bit of History

The country achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the 19th and 20th century, Greece gradually annexed neighboring islands and territories, most of them with Greek-speaking populations. During World War II, Greece was initially invaded by Italy (1940) and after that occupied by Germany (1941-44). A civil war between supporters of the king and Communist guerillas followed. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 revoked many political freedoms and liberties forced the king to flee the country, lasted several years. 1974 saw democratic elections and a referendum subsequently created a parliamentary republic. The monarchy was dead. In 1981 Greece joined the European Community (now the European Union) and became a proud member of the euro zone in 2002.
