Overview

Beer or wine? Berlin or Munich? Castle or club? Ski or hike? East or west? BMW or Mercedes? In fact, the answers are simple: both. Why decide? The beauty of Germany is that rather than choosing, you can explore both sides and enjoy the contrasts while doing so. Spend the weekdays hiking in the Alps and then on the weekend enjoy the thriving nightlife in one of Germany's bigger cities. Getting around this country couldn't be easier. Public transport is super convenient and gets you to all corners of the country. And if you plan to visit multiple regions, why not book a German Rail Pass? Germany is a great country with a rich and vibrant culture. So if you are going to Europe, make sure you spend a few days in Germany.

A bit of History

Two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the European Community, which later became the EU, and NATO. At the same time, the communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the subsequent end of the Cold War finally allowed for German unification in 1990. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro, which quickly become the world's second most important currency.
