Overview
China is of course an impressive
country by almost any standard. This huge country is home to roughly 1,3 billion people,
making it the largest country in the world. From the spectacular
mountains of Tibet to charming sandy beaches on the island of Hainan to great
shopping experiences in Shanghai, China has it all. You could probably travel in China for an
entire year and you and your friends would still only just get a glimpse of this amazing
country. And let's of course not forget the great Chinese cuisine like
Dim Sum or Beijing Duck. Once you have been there you will realize that China is a
country that is worth visiting over and again.
A bit of History
For many centuries the vast Chinese
Empire stood
as a leading civilization, outpacing most of the rest of the world in the arts
and sciences, however, in the 19th and 20th centuries, this vast country was
beset by regular civil unrest, major famines, military defeats and even foreign
occupation. After World War II, the Communist Party under leader Mao Ze
Dong set in place an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's
proud sovereignty, imposed very tough controls over everyday life and cost the
lives of tens of millions of people. From 1978 onwards, his successor Deng
Xiao Ping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic
development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the Chinese
people, living standards have improved fairly quickly and the freedom of
personal choice has expanded significantly, however, political controls
still remain tight.
