Angkor Wat, don’t forget to visit the charming capital of Phnom Penh. If you have time, also head of to the beach town of Sihanoukville.

A bit of History
Most Cambodians identify themselves as Khmers, descendants of the Angkor Empire. In 1863, the
king placed the country under French protection and Cambodia became part of French Indochina. Following Japanese occupation in World War II,
the country gained full independence in 1953. In April 1975, after several years of bloody fighting, the Communist “Khmer Rouge” captured the
capital Phnom Penh and evacuated all cities and towns. At least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, forced hardships, or starvation
during the brutal regime under Pol Pot. A Vietnamese invasion in 1978 forced the “Khmer Rouge” to retreat into the countryside. The Vietnamese
occupation was marked by almost 13 years of civil war. The Paris Peace Accords of 1991 prescribed free and open elections as well as a ceasefire,
which was not fully respected by the “Khmer Rouge”. However, UN-sponsored elections two years later finally restored some form of normality safeguarded
by a coalition government.
How to Get There
Cambodia currently has no
national airline so the best option to fly from Bangkok to Cambodia are
Thai Airways
or Bangkok Airways.
Both airlines offer flights to Phnom Penh and Bangkok Airways also
offers flights to Siem Real, the gateway to Angkor Wat. There are
usually several flights per day to both destinations. Direct flights
from Bangkok to Sihanoukville may start in the near future.
