Overview
Australia is a diverse country. No matter if you want to do a short city trip, a week-long beach vacation
or if you want to study English for a few months, Australia can offer you whatever you want. The Great Barrier Reef offers
some of the best diving in the world. The scenery in the outback are stunning and the wildlife with kangaroos and koalas is
unique. Australia is also known for its friendly locals. Aborigines, Europeans and Asians live happily side by side making
Australia a melting pot of many different cultures. When planning a trip to Australia it is easy to underestimate the vast distances
of this large country. If you plan to visit several corners of Australia in one trip it’s probably best to fly from city to
city.
A bit of History
Aboriginal settlers came to Australia from Asia around 40,000 years before the
first Europeans explorer began settling on the continent in the 17th century. No territorial claims were made until 1770 when
Captain James Cook took possession of the island in the name of the British Crown. Initially, six separate colonies were
created that later federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. From early on Australia took advantage of its
significant natural resources to rapidly develop agricultural and manufacturing industries. In recent decades, the country
has grown into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. During the 1990s it boasted one of the OECD's fastest
growing economies, a stellar performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980s. Current concerns include
climate-change issues such as the depletion of the ozone layer as Australia has one of the highest carbon emissions per
capital worldwide. More frequent droughts and the management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier
Reef, are also on the public’s mind.
